Description:
The Upper Mustang Trek takes you to the wonderful land of the forbidden/kingdom of Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang. The Buddhist dominated region lies in the border of Tibet and Nepal and is highly influenced by the Tibetan culture and lifestyle. The rocks are unusually formed with vibrant colors different than the usual and the high cliffs add up the beauty in the landscapes. We will get the opportunity to explore old caves, rock paintings, monasteries, and Gompas while viewing the stunning Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other mountains.
The other attraction of this trek is Kagbeni, a small village that leads to the Upper Mustang region. Extremely isolated, remote and barren, the region was restricted and was opened only about a one and a half-decade ago. The entry to the Upper Mustang region still needs permit approved by an appointed government official.
Lo Manthang, the old capital is an amazing place to explore. Visit to the Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar and the King’s Palace itself are the major activities one can indulge in while in Lo Manthang. It will not only give you a memorable experience but also a deeper understanding of the cultural values of the region and people. The other attraction is the Amchi Museum and School which gives the visitors experience in healing art and its adaptability with modern situations. A few hours' walk from Lo Manthang will take us to the famous Ghar Gompa believed to be as old as 1200 years.
Being in the Himalayan Rain Shadow, the upper Mustang Region still attracts many travelers even in Monsoon seasons with a dry atmosphere and occasional rainfall. The trek is not very difficult as the maximum altitude is only about 3,800m with dry air, less likely to give you altitude sickness. But one must always be careful with the wind that even carries small-sized stones and pebbles.
